Merry #Christmas from #Europe

Shiny ornaments, glossy wrapping paper tied with shimmering ribbons, greeting cards filled with friendship and love; familiar songs that stroke the strings of our hearts, beautiful carols that awe and inspire, cries of delighted children and voices of those we love.  The sights and sounds of Christmas are what we remember.

In Chicago, Jim and I had a tradition of filling the seats of our Christmas dinner table with friends who found themselves away from home and family.  This Christmas, the table as they say, has turned.  Jim, Sadie and I find ourselves alone, apart from those we hold dear.  Yet, we honor many of our traditions.  A Christmas Eve dinner of Polish delights.  We even invited in our feline friend, Puhi, our neighbor’s cat who enjoyed spending Christmas Eve snuggled on the couch with Jim.

On Christmas morning, we sat around the tree with our dear Sadie, listening to carols and opening our gifts.  Then we watched #It’s a Wonderful Life and cried as we do every year.   The sentimental story never gets old.  And we’ll honor yet another tradition–extending a seat at our dinner table to our neighbor, a good friend who finds herself away from her family in Slovenia.  Sharing our holiday is what Christmas means to us.

Instead of a lot of words, let me leave you with some sights and sounds of our first Christmas in #Europe.

Christmas helps us recall the magic of love, and the wonders of our amazing world.  But Christmas is there every day of the year–it’s merely a bit harder to spot without twinkling lights, brightly wrapped packages, squeals of joy and lilting melodies of our youth.  The spirit of Christmas is in the smiles of strangers, the kindness we impart onto others and the embrace of those we hold dear.
